Buenos Aires, Argentina

Experience the Latin American passion of the Argentinean capital, where tango and polo rub easily alongside gauchos and golf.

It’s a cliché, but one that’s hard to disagree with, but when you think of Latin American passion, you think of Buenos Aires. The tango; the vibrancy of a 24-hour city; the eclectic influence of the Spanish, Italian, French, and British on everything from the food and art to the architecture and sporting pursuits – Boca v River is unlike any football derby you’ll ever witness – has created a city that surprises at every turn of a cobbled street.

In the capital of the [current] greatest footballing nation on the world, polo is also mastered, with the Campeonato Argentino Abierto de Pol, arguably the sport’s most prestigious event. And where there’s prestige, there’s often golf. The Jockey Club was formed to bring together the most powerful families – who naturally share a passion for horseracing – in 1882, and just as polo fields would eventually become part of the organisation’s portfolio, so too did golf. And they went big, bringing in the pre-eminent Alister MacKenzie, of Augusta fame, to create two courses, Red and Blue, in 1930, just north of the city centre. Since then, it’s hosted the world’s finest golfers, including the 1970 World Cup.

So, in a city where you can learn to tango in the streets, witness the horsemanship of the gaucho, visit the historic Plaza de Mayo – where former First Lady Eva Perón addressed the masses – and enjoy a nightlife unlike any other, you can also play golf that’s been partly inspired by the Old Course, yet created by the man behind Augusta.
