Attend the Waste Management Phoenix Open for American sport’s ‘wildest party’ in Arizona, USA.
Scottsdale is the desert home for golf’s ‘rock star’ event, the Waste Management Phoenix Open, or as, one writer put it, ‘the wildest party in American sport’. A world away from the delicate etiquette and time-honoured traditions of Augusta and St Andrews, such is the party atmosphere of the event, they set a drink limit, albeit keeping the bar suitably low – or high, depending on which way you look at it – at ten drinks. Even then it’s a limit that’s often broken.
It has a Pro-Am full of A-listers, there’s an $8.8m prize fund for the main event, the greats of global golf always show up – previous winners include Arnold Palmer, Jack Nickalus, Phil Mickelson, Scottie Scheffler and last year’s winner Nick Taylor – and yet, the golf is almost a sideshow amidst a seven-day party with 700,000 guests. There’s four nights of live music, ensuring the festivities continues long into the night, with the likes of Snoop Dogg and Macklemore among those to have performed in previous years, helping to earn it the moniker ‘the greatest show on grass’.
A final par 3 that comes complete with three levels of stadium seating – the iconic 16th – means around 20,000 people can watch the pros attempt an ace, an experience that makes for, without doubt, one of golf’s greatest, and loudest, spectacles.
As if the Waste Management Phoenix Open isn’t already the stuff of sporting event dreams, add in three rounds at some of Arizona’s finest courses, and your bucket list is going to need rewriting.
