It’s not without good reason that UNESCO decided to add Hoi An to its World Heritage List. This ancient Vietnamese port town has manage to resist modern development better than most, hanging on to its roots that officially go back 500 or so years, but in reality much further. Timber-framed buildings line the river, merchant houses for the Japanese, who – together with the Chinese and even the Portuguese – have left their mark on this central Vietnamese town. They’re not alone, the town comprises more than 1,000 timber-framed houses, ensuring the authenticity spreads throughout.

The fish markets still have daily fish brought to their doors in the early hours by small fishing boats with the freshest of daily catches, and they form part of a cuisine that’s among the best in the country. Fuelled with vegetables from the nearby farming community of Tra Que – that lies between the town and the glorious An Bang beach – local dishes (from phos to rolls to pancakes) are reason enough, especially when taken in the surroundings of a town that transports you back in time. 

The authenticity of Hoi An is coupled with the proximity to world-class golf. Twisting your arm further is of course the golf, there’s a testing resort course on your doorstep in Vinpearl Resort & Golf Nam Hoi An, but twenty minutes north is Greg Norman’s BRG Da Nang, an hour away is Ba Na Hills and completing a trio of Championship quality is Laguna Lang, just beyond the coastal city of Danang.
