Hong Kong

Rugby’s sevens spectacle and ‘Royal’ heritage golf. The Hong Kong Sevens has long transcended rugby with its carnival atmosphere, and the private golf nearby is cause for celebration too.

Sevens rugby is global in a way that the full-sized game can never be, where the emphasis is on pace and panache over power, creating a sport that has been taken into the hearts of lesser-known rugby nations. USA has brought sprinters into the fold to win tournaments, Kenya has found its niche in rugby with sevens and while the likes of New Zealand, South Africa, England and Australia all compete, it’s the pacific islanders from Fiji who have made it world famous. Witnessing their dizzying array of skills and sleight of hand over a 14-minute contest is what has made sevens so famous and Hong Kong is their spiritual home. It is to sevens what Brazil’s Maracanã is to football, and the Lord’s is to cricket. The Hong Kong Sevens is the one they all want to win, having first started in 1976 and been graced by the greats ever since from Jonah Lomu and David Campese to Waisale Serevi and Bryan Habana.

It's not just the rugby that makes it bucket-list, it’s the festival around it, the 40,000-capacity fancy-dressed crowd that packs out Hong Kong Stadium, that turns it into rugby’s ‘Rio’, due to the carnival atmosphere. That you then head into the city state that’s become a gathering point for the greatest chefs in China, only adds to the experience.

The golf, if you know the right people, is exceptional, immaculate and challenging – always with stunning backdrops – with some of the best courses part of private clubs.
